Reading the Bible for Yourself
One fear stops a lot of people from leaving church: “If I am not under a pastor, how will I understand the Bible?” It is a fair question. For years you may have been told that only trained leaders can really explain God’s Word. But the Bible tells a different story. You can read it for yourself, and God will help you.
The Bereans checked for themselves
In the book of Acts, there was a group of people the Bible actually praises for not just taking the preacher’s word for it. They went home and checked the Scriptures themselves:
“…they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” — Acts 17:11
The Bible calls them “more noble” for doing this. Checking things for yourself is not rebellion. It is wisdom.
God’s Spirit is your teacher
When you belong to Christ, you are not left alone with a book you cannot understand. God Himself helps you understand it:
“But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you…” — 1 John 2:27
This does not mean teachers are useless. It means you are not helpless without one. The Spirit of God is your first and best teacher.
Just ask for help
When you get stuck — and you will — the Bible says to simply ask God for wisdom:
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally… and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5
Simple ways to start
- Begin with a Gospel. Read Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John first to get to know Jesus.
- Pray before you read. Ask God to teach you. Then read slowly.
- Take it plainly. Most of the Bible means just what it says. You do not need secret knowledge.
- Let the Bible explain the Bible. Hard verses get clearer when you read the verses around them and compare other passages.
- Read with a friend or two. Talking it over with others helps, and everyone learns.
Why this matters
When only “the experts” are trusted to read the Bible, ordinary believers stay weak and dependent. But God gave His Word to all of His people, and He gave His Spirit to help them understand it. You are not too simple to read the Bible. With prayer, time, and an honest heart, you can feed yourself — and you may find it comes alive in a way it never did when someone else did all the reading for you.
