God’s Plan for Mankind’s Salvation

Religion has a way of making salvation complicated — rules, rituals, membership, ladders to climb, boxes to check. But when you go back and read the Bible for yourself, God’s plan for saving mankind is stunningly simple. It rests on one word: believe.

This is the whole message of the Bible, and you can hold it in your hand. Here it is.

Every one of us has the same problem

Before the good news makes sense, we have to be honest about where we start. The Bible says all of us have fallen short. Not some of us. All of us.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23 (KJV)

“There is none righteous, no, not one.” — Romans 3:10 (KJV)

And sin has a cost. It separates us from a holy God, and on our own we cannot fix it.

“But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you…” — Isaiah 59:2 (KJV)

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” — Romans 6:23 (KJV)

That last verse already points to the way out. Sin earns death. But eternal life is a gift. You do not earn a gift. You receive it.

God made the first move

Here is the heart of it. We did not climb up to God. He came down to us. While we were still sinners, He loved us and acted.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
— John 3:16 (KJV)

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (KJV)

“…Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (KJV)

Jesus paid the debt we could not pay. He lived the life we could not live, died the death we deserved, and rose again. The work is finished. His own words from the cross were, “It is finished” (John 19:30).

You cannot earn it — and you were never meant to

This is where religion gets it backwards. Salvation is not a wage you work for. It is a gift you trust. The moment you try to earn it, you have stepped off of faith and back onto works.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” — Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us…” — Titus 3:5 (KJV)

“But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” — Romans 4:5 (KJV)

Read that last one again. To the person who does not work, but simply believes, faith itself is counted as righteousness. That is God’s plan in a single sentence.

So what does it mean to “believe”?

To believe is to trust. It is to stop leaning on yourself — your goodness, your record, your religious effort — and to put your full weight on Jesus Christ and what He did for you. Jesus said it more plainly than anyone.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” — John 6:47 (KJV)

“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” — John 11:25–26 (KJV)

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” — John 1:12 (KJV)

Notice how often one small word keeps appearing — believe, believeth, believe on his name. That is not an accident. It is the thread running through the entire Gospel of John, which tells us plainly why it was written:

“…these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” — John 20:31 (KJV)

The simplest instructions ever given

When a frightened man once asked the apostles the biggest question a person can ask — “What must I do to be saved?” — the answer was not a program. It was one sentence.

“…Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…” — Acts 16:31 (KJV)

Paul says the same thing to everyone, and he puts it within reach of anyone willing to trust and confess:

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” — Romans 10:9–10 (KJV)

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” — Romans 10:13 (KJV)

Whosoever. Not the qualified. Not the impressive. Not the religiously successful. Whosoever.

What faith really is

Faith is not a feeling you have to work up. It is confidence in God and in His promises. The Bible even defines it for us.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” — Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” — Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)

And faith is not something you manufacture on your own. It grows as you take in God’s Word.

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” — Romans 10:17 (KJV)

“(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)” — 2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV)

You are meant to know — not just hope

God’s plan does not leave you guessing about where you stand. He wants you to have assurance. Trust Him, and you can know.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” — John 5:24 (KJV)

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” — 1 John 5:13 (KJV)

And what He gives, He holds onto. Your security rests not on your grip on Him, but on His grip on you.

“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” — John 10:28 (KJV)

It really is this simple

That is God’s plan for the salvation of mankind, from beginning to end. We were lost and could not save ourselves. God loved us anyway. He sent His Son to pay for our sin and rise again. And He asks us to do the one thing a drowning person does when a hand reaches down — stop struggling, and take hold. Trust Him.

You do not need a building, a membership, or a religious résumé to do that. You never did. If you believe in your heart and call on His name, the Bible says you are saved — and you can know it.

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” — Romans 10:13 (KJV)

That is the whole plan. It was always meant to be this simple.
